We looked if there was a Higher Being Which made everything or let everything come into being. When we came to see that there was A Voice in the darkness that sounded we may wonder where that Voice came from. From texts or Words given by that same Voice that sounded in the void, we came to know it was an eternal Spirit, a god with no beginning and no end.

We know that the term Allah, in Arabic, is not subject to plurality, and that it was only One Eternal Being that spoke and made everything to see the light of this universe. There are no “Allahs” in Arabic, but man has made himself many gods. First they where just important figures or high persons who had a special title, like prophet, pharaoh, or something else. Though with the years those figures like Moshe (Moses), Pharaoh where also spoken of as being gods, like man had taken them also wonders of nature into gods, like the “Thunder”, “Lightning”, “Storm” a.o. which had according to the tribes or peoples other names. The world came to know those gods under different names, with remarkable figures like: Ninhursag the Mamma or Mami (mother), Anu (Akkadian + Sumerian sky father deity), Samas or Shamash (ancient Semitic solar deity), Baʿal (Hadad) who displaces the ancient deity El, Kumarbi (Hurrians chief deity), Aramazd (chief creator god in pre-Christian Armenian mythology) who was readily identified with Zeus through interpretatio Graeca, the two often sharing specific titles regarding greatness, bravery, or strength, Indra (guardian deity in Buddhism), Aphrodite (Hellenistic deity of desire), Apollo (Hellenistic and Roman deity of music, arts, knowledge, healing, plague, prophecy, poetry, manly beauty, and archery), Hades (Hellenistic underworld deity) and many others like Ranginui, Papatūānuku. They where all gods which could put man at ease, or give an quite conscience, though they could do nothing. Some of the ancient gods might perhpas be the same God as we still consider the Creator God, though because they did not yet know His real Name, they had given a name which described the function or position of that God. Also today there are people who wrongly use titles, considering it to be names of God or of their god.

Ēl or El is a Northwest Semitic word meaning “god” or “deity“, which was taken into many other languages to mean the same, a title but later also came to refer as a proper name to any one of multiple major Ancient Near East deities. though up to today it still means in many languages a god as well as The God. For the gods we can speak for example of the El of ‘so and so’, like the El of Megiddo. It should also be noted that in translating the Bible into English and some other languages, the Hebrew word “El” is translated variously as “God”, “god” and “angel”!

The terms El and Al with the term Allah do not lend themself to any gender. This means that there is no female or male gender for the term Allah. In English you can have god and goddess. In Arabic, or other languages where they also use ‘Allah’, this simply doesn’t exist, which shows that the term Allah is a lot more accurate than using the term God even if you are using a capital G. At least it is relatively more accurate in conveying the true nature of the Supreme Creator Who is The All, everything in One. Male and female creatures are created in the Image of that Supreme Being.

That Eternal Being Who is the only Creator, Preserver, Nourisher, etc., is the only Supreme God to Whom nobody is equal.

The Quran, the holy book of Islam, reminds us of the falsity of all alleged gods. To the worshippers of man-made objects, it asks:

037.095 He said: “Worship ye that which ye have (yourselves) carved?

037.096 “But Allah has created you and your handwork!”

Al-Qur’an, 037.095-096 (As-Saaffat [Those who set the Ranks, Drawn Up in Ranks])

Text Copied from DivineIslam’s Qur’an Viewer software v2.913

Or in plain contemporary English

‘How can you worship things you carve with your own hands, when it is God who has created you and all your handiwork?’(37:95-96)

At another point, God says,

013.016 Say: “Who is the Lord and Sustainer of the heavens and the earth?” Say: “(It is) Allah.” Say: “Do ye then take (for worship) protectors other than Him, such as have no power either for good or for harm to themselves?” Say: “Are the blind equal with those who see? Or the depths of darkness equal with light?” Or do they assign to Allah partners who have created (anything) as He has created, so that the creation seemed to them similar? Say: “Allah is the Creator of all things: He is the One, the Supreme and Irresistible.”

Al-Qur’an, 013.016 (Ar-Rad [The Thunder])

Text Copied from DivineIslam’s Qur’an Viewer software v2.913

or

Say, ‘Why do you take protectors other than Him, who can neither benefit nor harm even themselves?’ Say, ‘Are the blind equal to those who can see? And are the depths of darkness equal to the light?’ Have the partners they assign to God created anything like His creation so that their creation is indistinguishable from His? Say,‘God is the Creator of all things: He is the One, the All Compelling.’” (13:16)

To the worshippers of heavenly bodies the Quran cites the story of Abraham:

006.076 When the night covered him over, He saw a star: He said: “This is my Lord.” But when it set, He said: “I love not those that set.”

006.077 When he saw the moon rising in splendour, he said: “This is my Lord.” But when the moon set, He said: “unless my Lord guide me, I shall surely be among those who go astray.”

006.078 When he saw the sun rising in splendour, he said: “This is my Lord; this is the greatest (of all).” But when the sun set, he said: “O my people! I am indeed free from your (guilt) of giving partners to Allah.

006.079 “For me, I have set my face, firmly and truly, towards Him Who created the heavens and the earth, and never shall I give partners to Allah.”

Al-Qur’an, 006.076-079 (Al-Anaam [Cattle, Livestock])

Text Copied from DivineIslam’s Qur’an Viewer software v2.913

Or in plain contemporary English

“When the night grew dark over him he saw a star and said, ‘This is my Lord,’ but when it set, he said, ‘I do not like things that set.’ And when he saw the moon rising he said, ‘This is my Lord,’ but when it too set, he said, ‘If my Lord does not guide me, I shall be one of those who go astray.’  Then he saw the sun rising and cried, ‘This is my Lord! This is greater.’ But when the sun set, he said, ‘My people, I disown all that you worship beside God. I have turned my face as a true believer towards Him who created the heavens and the earth. I am not one of the polytheists.’”  (6:76-79)

Notice how every time there is also written “He” when it speaks about that eternal Creator Being.

Prophet Muhammad, the final messenger of Islam, also had it dictated that Allah said

059.022 Allah is He, than Whom there is no other god;- Who knows (all things) both secret and open; He, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

059.023 Allah is He, than Whom there is no other god;- the Sovereign, the Holy One, the Source of Peace (and Perfection),  the Guardian of Faith, the Preserver of Safety,  the Exalted in Might, the Irresistible, the Supreme: Glory to Allah! (High is He) above the partners they attribute to Him.

059.024 He is Allah, the Creator, the Evolver, the Bestower of Forms (or Colours). To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names: whatever is in the heavens and on earth, doth declare His Praises and Glory: and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

Al-Qur’an, 059.022-024 (Al-Hashr [Exile, Banishment])

Text Copied from DivineIslam’s Qur’an Viewer software v2.913

Or in plain English:

“He is God: there is no god other than Him. It is He who knows what is hidden as well as what is in the open, He is the Lord of Mercy, the Giver of Mercy. He is God: there is no god other than Him, the Controller, the Holy One, Source of Peace, Granter of Security, Guardian over all, the Almighty, the Compeller, the Truly Great; God is far above anything they consider to be His partner. He is God: the Creator, the Originator, the Shaper. The best names belong to Him. Everything in the heavens and earth glorifies Him: He is the Almighty, the Wise.” (59:22-24)

Every time it says “He”. Perhaps because it was in patriarchal societies the word “He” made have been preferred instead of saying “It” or instead of using “She”. Though when we look in further texts we come to read about the position of that Most High Supreme Being Who calls Himself (Itself) a Father, than we do have good reason to accept that This Being may be called a “He” or might be a Masculine or Male Spirit Being.

One thought on “What is the Gender of God

Namaste, Jan Willem
